CERTAIN HIGHLIGHTS
U Than Maung was formerly a Law Officer cum Public Attorney with the Attorney General’s Office of the Union of Myanmar for almost 16 years.
Then, he joined international law firms for more than 2 decades and had undertaken a wide range of matters in the fields of intellectual property and trademark registration for world-wide proprietors, investment, trade and economic transactions including taxation, labour and liaises with government authorities and regulatory bodies in the country.
AUTHORSHIP
He is the author of more than a hundred of articles on business laws both in English and Myanmar language. The book with the title of “Legal Articles on Intellectual Property Rights” is his most popular authorship having published three times in respective years 2005, 2008 and 2016. That is a collection of his legal articles both in English and Myanmar which have been appeared in various journals and periodicals for years.
His most current publication is the bi-lingual book namely “Notes of Legal Research”, a collection of legal research he had endeavoured during last 2 decades.
PARTICIPATIONS
He is a member to certain renowned international law associations such as International Trademark Association (INTA), Inter Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) and ASEAN IP Association (AIPA) (One of Country Councilors) and the co-founder of the local Myanmar Intellectual Property Proprietors Association of Myanmar (MIPPA).
He plays a prominent role as the presenter or lecturer on Intellectual Property Law, Investment Law, Special Economic Zone Law, Land Law, Industrial Law, Labour Law and other legal issues in several occasions and seminars.
During the first Session of the Union Parliament, he was appointed as a member of the “Commission for Assessment of Legal Affairs and Special Issues” of the People’s Parliament called “Pyithu Hluttaw” equivalent to Lower House.
He is also assisting various governmental ministries, NGOs and social bodies for legal drafting and consults. Those, among others, include being a member of Legal Affairs Committee of UMFCCI and Legal Advisor of the Myanmar Engineering Council, the Kyauk Phyu Special Economic Zone Management Committee, the Councillor of the “Labour Dispute Arbitration Council”.
Recently, the Ministry of Commerce has appointed him as the Vice Chairman of the Myanmar Competition Commission (MCC) established under the Myanmar Competition Law of 2015 which came into force on 2017.
